Nan Layad nan Likhatan is an old and very popular song in Bontoc, speaking of a love that has gone awry yet still hinting at a chance for reconciliation. My brother asked me to listen to a contemporary rendition by a band, composed mostly of Ifontoks, named PE'tune and sent the file to me. I have heard this band play and I liked the voice quality of their lead vocals, but they have since disbanded (my brother says their lead guitarist went to the US). However, they were able to record an album of the same name as their band, where Nan Layad nan Likhatan is one of the tracks.
Although it is a contemporary rendition, they included gongs as part of their musical instruments, much like Joey Ayala's Ay, Ay, Salidummay. Listen, and be the judge whether it is a better rendition (compared to Lourdes Fangki perhaps?) or not hehehe.. However, since I cannot post an audio in this blog, I asked wgacusana to use the song with videos of the Lang-ay Festival 2007. I am very thankful for his help.
When the song asks, 'Ento pay kasin chachi? Nar-os cha't am-in' (Where did they all go? All of them have faded away), this can also be said of our songs and dances, showcased in this video only because of the Lang-ay Festival.

Nice video. Lang-ay Festival is in Bontoc, I assume. Interesting use of gongs with the rock music. I think it works.
Hi Wil, thanks! Yap, the Lang-ay Wine Festival is held in Bontoc, but it is an activity of the whole province so the different municipalities participate in all the activities, especially the street dancing (shown in the video).
Have you ever heard of the song? I have heard a lot of non-Ifontoks singing it.
I don't think I've heard the song before. It might've been sung when I was around a celebration or what have you, but I was just not aware of it. The only Igorot song that rings a bell for me is salidummay.

i think i prefer lourdes' rendition because her version is kinda sad/haunting which is very fitting sa lyrics. the petune version, on the other hand, is medyo lively ang dating so hindi masyado feel ang sadness. Hehe

Hi Sir B (got this title from Ferricardia and Jean), you are back! Yes, this version is upbeat so the song doesn't sound sad. If you really want to feel the song, maybe Lourdes Fangki is still the best version hehehe...
And yes Trublue, I think Lourdes Fangki is still active. The last time I saw her sing was in Bontoc Cable Cafe two years ago. She sang 'Montanosa nan ngadan...' (I don't know if this is the title of the song though), and other English old songs, but not 'Nan Layad'.

No, that song should remain in the sad versions, to fit the lyrics. That "rock" version makes it in the tastes of lito camo songs such as otso otso or wowowie. yeah! here is "Rawingan", i checked it out & tis really a true bontok piece.:

Thank you for giving some complement to the Pe'tune version of Nan Layad... During the making of Pe'Tune all we aimed was to create local Ethnic band in the Cordillera. Pe'Tune (pronounced as PECHEN, means peace pact)is actually composed of two local bands: Shadows band and Daluyon who both joint effort to the success of the 1st Pe'Tune CD album on 2006.
All the 7 songs were original composition of Pe'Tune. We included popular song by legendary Igorot composers like: NAN LAYAD by: Sofia Oakes Bacwaden, ODEM-DEM by: Felix Khensay, LUNGAYBAN by: Jacinto Lapinas and CHAYAWEN by: Rev. Fr. Daniel Carino. Since Pe'Tune music is a fusion of ethic, rock, raggae, and pop we asked the permission from the original composers before making our own live version.
The launching of Pe'Tune album was a great success where we donated the proceeds to cancer patients, Juliet Bataclao Oakes and Arron Tudlong. Pe'Tune Cd's continue to be saleable local and international. While it is true that two of the Pe'Tune members are oversees (USA and Europe)we are not disbanded. We actually had our latest concert last July 2008 at the Baguio Convention center.

It's almost 17 years when my dad(Pedro Liswid Chinalpan Sr) had passed away. He was a great father and a good citizen also in the prov. where we lived (kalinga, some people acknowledges his good deeds. Unluckily, his ambition to become a politician failed bec. of dirty politics. Still he continued his good works as a peacemaker, adviser, counseling etc...we missed him very much..to all of you so many thanks for your appreciation of my dad's songs.
The Chinalpan kids are my school mates at St. Williams Academy in Bulanao,Tabuk,Kalinga.We use to sing Layad nan Likhatan when we were young.
The composer of that song is Christopher Oakes from Bontoc using the Tune of an English Song "Love At Home" after he got broken-hearted and it spread like Wild Fire when he sing it on Occasions.Mr. Pedro Chinalpan made it poular and recorded it on 45rpm then Lourdes made a different rendition of it.
